The importance of dosimeters in the healthcare sector
Hospital staff frequently uses machines such as X-ray or CT scans which produces radiations harmful to the human body. While the intensity is low, repeat exposure to such radiation needs to be monitored by using devices called dosimeters in order to ensure safety of the staff. Open Web Technology helped a large hospital to better monitor 19 000 dosimeters by revamping and adding new features to an existing dosimeter-tracking application.
How digital benefits compliance to the law
The older dosimeter-tracking app, written in an old programming language, was no longer compliant with the current regulations of the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH). By revamping the app, new digital formats are now available and conform to regulations. Additional regulations required to accurately track the doses absorbed by eyes, critical body parts when considering the harmful potential of radiations. The redesigned app now includes in-built calculations to get this information.
Iterative journey
- Inventory of existing application and analysis of new requirements.
- Iterative UI/UX design to match user needs.
- Deliveries in the client infrastructure at the end of each sprint.
- Fully compliant with the client’s processes

APIs for future use
Open Web Technology used APIs in order to future-proof the application and allow other systems to access the data. With the designed APIs, it is now possible to make the radiation doses reports available for users and other applications.

From VB6 to Angular
The older dosimeter-tracking app, written in VB6 and exporting csv files, needed to be revamped to comply with regulations. This was also needed to ensure compatibility with the current operating systems. By using Angular, it was possible to have an up-to-date software with a modern technology stack, and exports in xml format as required by the health regulations authorities.

An app linked to the active directory
The new dosimeter-tracking app is now linked to the Hospital’s active directory. This inclusion in the global ecosystem system makes it more convenient for employees to use.
