Providing Patients with a Digital Medical Assistant
Supporting patients during treatment anytime and anywhere, reinforcing their relation with the medical team
Our client, a leading group of Swiss private clinics wanted to explore the possibility of offering their patients a supporting application. Putting such an application in the hands of their patients would allow them to follow their treatment progress anytime, anywhere and reinforce their relation with the medical team.
Open Web Technology was approached to investigate the feasibility of such an application by exploring existing solutions on the market and conducting an assessment with potential users namely patients, doctors and nurses.
Our team followed this three approach to deliver this project
Step 1: Research
We first chose to focus on a single chronic disease before extending the application to more diseases. This allowed us to be more accurate in our research and quickly obtain a concrete proposal.
We interviewed patients, nurses and doctors with different specialties. This allowed us to understand the end-to-end experience of a patient and assess to their needs and ideas.
Finally, we benchmarked a large number of existing medical applications to better advice our Client on the existing market of mobile applications.
Step 2: Pain points identification
Once the patients’ journey was fully understood, we used our brown-paper methodology to detail their treatment path and identify their pain-points which we organized along the various stages of their journey from detection to post-treatment.
Step 3: Solution specification
The last step was to transform the pain-points and ideas into solutions and more specifically functionalities that will constitute the final application. The result was a mobile application with three functional areas:
- Smart assistant to organize the patient’s journey
- Medical data and treatment transmission
- Access to trusted information and articles about the illness
Furthermore, our designer team worked on defining the user experience, and user interface. The result was a clickable prototype that would illustrate our solution to our client.
As a result, our client now has a strong business case for their application, and a very clear idea about what they should offer to their patients. The immediate next step is to start the development of the application knowing that in the future, our medical assistant will be extended to support multiple illnesses.
We have suggested a development roadmap, leveraging agile methodologies, releasing a new version every 3 month with ever more features:
- The first version of our medical assistant would send reminders to the patient, book a medical appointment, give him information about his treatment, suggest wellness activities.
- A second and third version would integrate directly with the clinics medical data, providing real time information about consultation results, treatment progress, prescription information and appointment management.
